In 2025, Apple plans to upgrade the entry-level iPhone SE with an OLED screen, per the most recent Asia Nikkei story.
Earlier this year, while vendors were bidding on the project, there were rumors that a less expensive iPhone SE would feature a more sophisticated screen. Now that an iPhone SE 4 is expected to launch in the upcoming year, things seem to be moving forward.
“Apple has begun placing orders for OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone SE from China’s BOE Technology Group and South Korea’s LG Display,” according to Nikkei, citing numerous sources.
As a result of the change, Japan Display and Sharp will no longer be producing LCD screens for iPhones there.
At the moment, Apple sources its iPhone OLED panels from Samsung, LG, and BOE, with Samsung making up around half of the supply. Since introducing OLED to the iPhone X for the first time in 2017, Apple has expanded the use of the technology to other products.
Reportedly, the next cheaper iPhone SE will sport a 6.7-inch screen instead of the current model’s 4.7-inch panel. The gadget is anticipated to maintain its entry-level cost in part by recycling pre-existing display panels. To maintain closer parity with more recent iPhone models, the phone might also add an Action button, replace Touch ID with Face ID, and support USB-C for charging.
At its “Glowtime” event on September 9, Apple is anticipated to reveal the new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro in addition to new Apple Watches and fourth-generation AirPods.
